Fred Says!

Perseverance and Determination pays off!

On Friday, April 22, 2011, James Grant once again stepped up to the plate and hit a "home run" for our club.

It all began a few weeks earlier when a coordinator (Sina) from the Presidio YMCA emailed the Lake Merced Fishing Program and asked for assistance. James went to work on the project and was able to enlist Ed Figone, John Romero from the Tyee Club, Hank Farr, Danny Gregori from the  Golden Gate Rod & Gun Club and Joe Carlomagno from the SFFD fishing program.

Our club provided 20 fishing Rods and Reels that were donated by Cal-Trout and refurbished  courtesy of John Romero, Ed Figone dug into his personal collection of hooks to complete the hardware portion of this endeavor.

Early Friday evening of the event, 13 youth (11-13yrs) all from inner city schools, arrived with 3 adult chaperons from the YMCA. They had a picnic lunch, fishing stories from our crew and had a great time learning about fishing and the patience required for the sport. A great time was had by all and the event was concluded at 8:00pm.

Now that summer is here and the weather gets better, we hope to have more events like this one. We need a list of volunteers for the coming months, pick some months and times that you could be available and let us know. The time you spend on a fishing event can be used for a credit to your yearly 8 hours contributed to the club.

That's all for now,
Semper Fi,

Happy kids at Lake MercedIt was a beautiful sunny Tuesday morning at the Pacific Rod & Gun Club.

Mother Nature was truly accommodating for 32 Third Grade Students from St. Brigid School in San Francisco. The Students were on a mission to release some very small Trout in the beginning of their Life Cycle as a class project.  more photos...   read more..

Members of the Pacific Rod and Gun Club, California Trout, Federation of Fly Fishers, San Francisco Police Department youth fishing program, Golden West Womens Fly Fishers, Golden Gate Angling and Casting Club, Tyee Club, Pacifica 4H club, and Parkmerced, came together to create a new program for San Francisco Bay Area youth.

The common goal is to have a working youth fishing program by July of 2011.

Initial donations of a fishing pier, large nets, and rods and reels from California Trout, plus $10,000 in seed money from Pacific Rod and Gun Club, will greatly help to get the program rolling. Parkmerced has pledged additional support once the program is further along.
